105 Paper Planes

The original plan was to create a dynamic, stilled image of suspended objects with Sketchup set against an Ecoline backdrop made of paper.

But this proved tricky: With Sketchup I can’t do much more than draw cube-shaped objects actually. For me it’s almost impossible to create something lively with it or to suggest a bit of movement with it. After some contemplation, I decided to also make the foreground – the suspended objects – of something physical too, instead of a Sketchup drawing, and to then photograph these just like the background and use it in the drawing.

The most obvious, and easiest, what first occurred to me, was to photograph some paper airplanes, and combine this with the also photographed Ecoline background, using Gimp. These paper airplanes certainly gave me the dynamic effect I was looking for. Hung, suspended on string, photographed and edited with Gimp, my favorite drawing program. TEXT: VINCENT THOMAS
