Made during a stay in a hospital that was still located in the center of The Hague. The purpose was to make material that I could transform on the computer later, once home. It never came to that. The paper on which the figures are glued has the size A5, 148 x 210 mm. Soon I will complete the series as I meant to, modify the cutouts, another 10 years project!
Photo cut-outs in one night.
Explanation in the post paper creatures (2009)
Some material I found while cleaning up my workspace. Practically all my work has finally been mapped. Although I won’t remember a lot.
Concrete always comes back in my work, one day or the other. From these items I have no specifications, nor a clue of where they are, like so many items.
These drawings are made from thick paper, ecoline, pencils, other color materials etc. Spring 2004 Utrecht. Just discovered them in a box. 15 years ago.
The merging of something heavy and massive and something much more vulnerable. Gives it the shelter it needs, without a carrier it would be lost. One by the grace of the other.

Two years TU Delft experience. I actually ignored the exact subjects and I put all my energy into the fun design assignments. Like hand sketching and form theory. But in the end the exact subjects counted for 80% of the propedeuse. And actually I was totally unprepaired about studying things, with books and stuff. But in those two years I think the seed did germinate, and contaminated and went to look at designing in a certain way. My eyes opened and I learned what I wanted to do. Perhaps this, here and now, the unexpected path, which this blog illustrates, that I am walking now. The road to nowhere, fortunate!
It feels like a largely failed mission from december 2017 till may 2019. 12 paintings.
“Very useful creation” The cigar remnants flow into the bin almost automatically. The goal is not to give the fine dust the chance to drift over the table and through the air anymore.
A usb led lamp with the possibility to burn incense. The top of the wooden box is a piece of a tile including steel profiles that are used to finish the corners of tiles – eg. in a bathroom. The smoke of incense is something I can look for hours. With the leds on top of the construction it is even more fun while the smoke is illuminated from below.
Finally this project is finished. Took me half a year. In the small space I work there was hardly space to finish it. I became gloomy every time I saw the half finished building materials. Never will work like this again. Space, rather room to work first.
Hiking on the bike through the city and try to capture nice views. 27/04 Since I make these citysnaps I realize that the light conditions like these weeks this April were pretty rare. Dark clouds and sunny openings in between. Have to make some kind of weather station to know when to go hiking.
Thanks to LED light bulbs and the little heat they emit it is possible now to create all kinds of lamps that would normally go burn when a regular light bulb has been used. Earlier in the timeline are more examples. But because of this risk factor I will fist think it over before constructing new lamps.
Not really functional yet, it has to be modified still. The thing is that it can hardly stand on land. In the sea it’s like a fish in the water.
Emptiness – an empty space, spatially. The question is whether something swims through it is an entity or nothing. If not, the space is still empty and am I a fool, creating things that are nothing and the space remains empty.
