1999, a new counter for the American Book Center in The Hague. Over the past 23 years, it has hardly moved from position and is still highly functional as a quality service counter with two cash registers. Because the store has rather limited space, round forms were chosen so that employees and customers would not hurt themselves when moving past or around sharp corners. It was the only way this size would work. Other clever details are found in the lower area of the service counter which contains all sorts of small compartments and sliding drawers for bags, packaging and appliances. The floor behind the counter is elevated so that the employees have a better overview. The counter was built in stages upstairs in the store itself so that it could be brought downstairs in sections in order to ensure that the store could stay open during construction. The logo of the ABC is found in the round curves of the counter. Originally there were lights behind the colored plexiglass, however these had to be removed as a safety precaution. The colors are in sync with the logo and the rest of store. TEXT: VINCENT THOMAS
